Positive Literature To Develop Values

Bandar Seri Begawan - Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hazair urged local writers, poets, composers and literary enthusiasts to discuss on how to realise the nation's vision to become "Negara Zikir" based on the Malay Islamic Monarchy.

The minister spoke at the "Malam Puisi dan Syair Titian Kasih 2010" organised by Persatuan Gaphar Brunei at the Language and Literature Bureau in Berakas Saturday night.

He said the task to strengthen and develop literature is not easy especially in the new era that is exposed to various modern entertainments that give more choices to fulfill the people's needs. The effort to strengthen and develop the role of positive literature to the community needs to be implemented in teamwork among the various parties.

This is important as an effective tool to promote positive values to all communities and at the same time generate networking among various parties especially to those concerned with traditional literature.

"We need to give back and straighten traditional poetry because it is still relevant in current context based on its own function and entity philosophy," said the minister.

Positively, he said literature can be watched, read and seen and has shown the action and thinking of the community and at the same managed to reflect the worldview of the nation.

The minister expressed his appreciation to all GAPHAR members for their initiative in successfully fulfilling the development of local literature and at the same time uphold the Malay language.

Such an effort has also managed to create awareness, support and encouragement to the community and residents at all levels especially among the youths in order to love and develop interest in the use of Malay as a national language through the beauty, romance and purity of the poetic language.

The night is the gathering night for some of the local literati to further foster closer relationship among local poets and writers. It is hoped to give a new breathe to enliven and develop poetry which is one of the literary branches which is becoming less popular among the new community compared with the community in the past.

GAPHAR President Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mohamad made a welcoming speech.

The audience listened to poetry readings and saw the Sketsa Teatar presented by the UBD Rakis Club Group and Nasyid performances.

Also present were the Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, and senior officers from the ministry and the Language and Literature Bureau.
