Jakarta - Indonesia and South Korea have agreed to enhance their defense cooperation within the framework of a strategic partnership, a minister said.
"We will enhance it by renewing the existing cooperation," Indonesian Defence Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said following a meeting with his South Korean counterpart, Kim Tae Young, here on Wednesday.
Since both sides signed a strategic partnership agreement in 2006, they had been committed to developing cooperation in various fields including defence, he said.
The defence ministries of the two countries organized an annual forum called "Joint Committee and Logistics Meeting" to discuss various fields of cooperation they had realized and would realize, he said.
"So we will renew the cooperation by expanding its scope under the framework of strategic partnership," he said.
Earlier, Secretary General of the Defence Ministry Vice Marshal Eris Herryanto said through the joint committee, the two defence ministries had succeeded in carrying out activities in the field of defence cooperation.
"The success includes enhanced cooperation in the production, maintenance, grant and technological transfer of military armament systems," he said.
In addition, Indonesia also had put emphasis on technological transfer in any of its cooperation with other nations, he said.
"The technological transfer will in the end encourage the improvement of domestic defence industry`s capability to produce products according to the specifications set by TNI as a user," he said. (T.R018/S012/HAJM/S012/P003)
