UN Habitat Builds 3,500 Homes in Aceh

Banda Aceh - The United Nations Agency, UN Habitat, has completed at least 3,500 houses for earthquake and tsunami victims in Aceh province, while another 1,000 are still under construction.

Director of UN Habitat for Nairobi, Daniel Biau, said after launching a book in Banda Aceh on Tuesday said that building of the houses was to meet the wish of the people.

"The people decide on the types of the houses, while we provide funding for the construction. And I think this is a good thing, because it is the people who decide on the construction process," he said.

He also said that the housing assistance for the people in Aceh is the responsibility of the world community.

Besides funding the houses construction, the UN agency, which has been helping the process of rehabilitation and reconstruction of post-tsunami Aceh for almost two years, has also carried out several other restoration programs like the economic empowerment of the Acehnese people.

Daniel hoped what the world community has been doing for Aceh would also help improving the economic growth in the province.
