Poetry-Writing Competition To Encourage Development Of National Language

Bandar Seri Begawan - The poetry-writing competition, which is part of the activities for the Knowledge Convention (Majlis Ilmu 2007) held in conjunction with His Majesty`s 61st birthday celebration, is still open for registration until July 28.

This year`s theme is "Aqidah Kukuh Membawa Berkat". The objective of the competition is to enliven the activities of the convention.

The competition is also to uphold and develop the progress of Malay language and literature through poetry and to encourage all residents and citizens to appreciate the Malay language. It is also to increase the use of Bahasa Melayu as the country`s official language.

The competition is open to citizens and permanent residents of Negara Brunei Darussalam. Each participant is only allowed to send one entry, which will correspond to one of two categories, A and B.

Category A is open to Form Four up to Form Six students, with each entry containing two poems. Category B is open to the public, with each entry containing three poems. All poems must be the original works of the writers.

The first-, second- and third-place winners in category A will receive B$700, B$600 and B$500, respectively) and three consolation prize winners will receive B$300 each. The first-, second- and third-place winners in category B will receive B$1000, B$800 and B$600, respectively, and three consolation prize winners will receive B$400 each. The closing date for the competition is on July 28 at 3.30pm.
